The Newton County Eighth District Circuit Court grand jury convened on Monday, Sept. 25 and handed down indictments for 18 suspects.
James Karl Ray was indicted for statutory rape and sexual battery of a child under the age of 14 on May 27, 2016. The victim is referred to as E.W. in court documents. Also indicted were:
Longtime EMT and Decatur firefighter Karla Rushing voiced several complaints of the county’s first responders at the board of supervisors’ regular meeting on Monday. Rushing surveyed all of the county’s fire chiefs and dispatchers to prepare her report, which focused on the county’s first responders needs.
Last season, the Union Yellowjackets trounced Lake in a non-division game 35-13 on their way to an 7-3 regular season and a berth in the Class 2A playoffs. The shoe was on the other foot on Friday night as the Hornets outgained the Yellowjackets nearly 3 to 1 while spoiling Union’s homecoming in a 34-0 win.
The Newton County Cougars went into Friday’s homecoming matchup with Enterprise knowing they had to stop the Bulldogs’ potentially potent ground game. However, that task proved to be more difficult than expected as the Bulldogs rolled up 436 rushing yards while handing the Cougars a 30-10 loss at Cougar Stadium.
