NCHS sweeps soccer matches

It was a good week for the Newton County soccer programs as both boys’ and girls’ programs swept a pair of matches from Sumrall and Morton.

Against Sumrall, the Lady Cougars took a 3-0 win as Chloe Gressett, Josie Hurst and Brynn Boutwell all scored goals. Hurst also had an assist in the shutout win. In the boy’s match, Newton County took a 1-0 win as Nathan Lewis scored the team’s only goad with an assist from Garrett Mills.

Against Morton, the Lady Cougars took a 13-0 win over the Lady Panthers. Vallie Weems had the hat trick with three goals while Macey Hale, Josie Hurst and Brynn Boutwell each scored two goals apiece. Morgan Massey, Lanie Phillips, Katelynn Gipson and Rhianna Gentry each scored goals as well. In the boys’ contest, the Cougars took a 5-2 win. Christian Valazquez, Nathan Lewis, Cole Shimfessell and Lee Hill all scored goals. The other goal was scored as Morton knocked the ball in their own goal. Lee Hill and Joel Hill each had assists.

Newton County has two games scheduled for this week as they will travel to Quitman on Thursday for a Division 5-4A match and will host Northeast Lauderdale on Friday.
