In a battle of two of the area’s better teams, it was 2A Newton that came away with the win over the 4A Cougars.

Newton’s Brandon Payne put in the go-ahead shot with 35 seconds remaining as Newton took an 55-52 win over homestanding Newton County on Friday night.

Hundreds of families pay their respects to veterans

On a cool but sunny Saturday morning, hundreds of military families from across the state came to the Mississippi Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Newton for this years’ Wreath’s Across American program. The event was sponsored by Friends of Mississippi Veterans and its annual meeting was held in conjunction with the program.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
