Newton County 4-H Club hosts robotics and LEGOS club
Newton County Academy's pre-district schedule extracted three more losses last week.
Members of East Central Community College’s Theta Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda received top honors during the State Leadership Conference and qualified for national competition in 16 categories. National competition will be held this summer in Baltimore, Md. The state conference was held at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.
It was a rough week on the baseball diamond for Newton County as they lost three games.
The Cougars opened Division 5-4A play and were swept by Northeast Lauderdale 12-4 and 12-2. Then on Saturday, the Cougars lost a 9-7 contest to Morton to finish out the week.
After serving his country in World War II, retired Staff Sgt. Charles Ralph Gardner returned to his hometown of Union to serve his community. For 40 years, the lifelong Union native owned Gardner's Electric Shop, providing appliances to families all over Newton and Neshoba counties and beyond.
In 2009, Rev. Donald R. Taylor, a well-loved and respected evangelist from the Conehatta area, had been on a mission trip to Indonesia.
Newton High Booster Club to host Big Blue Barbecue
The Newton High School Athletic Booster Club will sponsor a “Big Blue Barbecue”
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday March 9 at Cash Money in Newton. Chicken and rib plates will be available.
Newton United Methodist Church will be again be hosting its annual Live Drive-Through Nativity on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Volunteers from NUMC and the surrounding community will participate in live depictions of scenes surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Distinguished Young Woman program for Newton County will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at ECCC’s Huff Auditorium.
Doors will open around 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door and program books will be $5.
They are competing for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Newton County for 2019. They are all juniors.

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.
Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
