Three girls vie for Distinguished Young Woman title on Saturday

The Distinguished Young Woman program for Newton County will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at ECCC’s Huff Auditorium.

Doors will open around 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door and program books will be $5.

They are competing for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Newton County for 2019.  They are all juniors.

VR comes to classrooms

When it comes to virtual reality technology in Mississippi high schools, Newton Municipal School District is at the head of the class.

The Newton Board of Education recently accepted a $3,100 scholarship to install a virtual reality sensor classroom.

McGaugh, Thornton to wed next month

Dwayne McGaugh of Union and Melanie McGaugh of Forest are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Erin Nicole McGaugh, to Jonathan David Thornton, son of Brenda and David Thornton of Gilmer, Texas.

The bride is the granddaughter of Frank and Donnis McGaugh of Union and Gaynell Risher Countryman fo Forest.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
