Newton County Academy's pre-district schedule extracted three more losses last week.
The Generals lost a pair of games to Leake Academy, falling 7-3 on Monday night and 7-6 on Thursday. Then on Friday, the Generals lost 11-1 to Lamar School to finish out the week.
Members of East Central Community College’s Theta Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda received top honors during the State Leadership Conference and qualified for national competition in 16 categories. National competition will be held this summer in Baltimore, Md. The state conference was held at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.
It was a rough week on the baseball diamond for Newton County as they lost three games.
The Cougars opened Division 5-4A play and were swept by Northeast Lauderdale 12-4 and 12-2. Then on Saturday, the Cougars lost a 9-7 contest to Morton to finish out the week.
After serving his country in World War II, retired Staff Sgt. Charles Ralph Gardner returned to his hometown of Union to serve his community. For 40 years, the lifelong Union native owned Gardner's Electric Shop, providing appliances to families all over Newton and Neshoba counties and beyond.
In 2009, Rev. Donald R. Taylor, a well-loved and respected evangelist from the Conehatta area, had been on a mission trip to Indonesia.

The Newton High School Athletic Booster Club will sponsor a “Big Blue Barbecue”
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday March 9 at Cash Money in Newton. Chicken and rib plates will be available.
A home on Third Avenue in Newton was gutted by a fire this afternoon.
Firefighters from Newton, Decatur and Hickory responded to the blaze, which consumed the interior of a brick home that had a chimney.
There were no apparent injuries from the fire as of this afternoon. The cause is under investigation.
Four Newton County teenagers are being held at the Lauderdale County Jail after being arrested after shooting at a Lauderdale County sheriff’s deputy and leading authorities on a high speed chase on Monday afternoon.
While no one was injured, shots were reportedly fired at a Lauderdale County deputy’s patrol car during the pursuit.
Newton County has been included in today’s winter weather advisory by the National Weather Service. The counties of Kemper, Rankin, Scott and Newton are expected to get light rain that will gradually mix with then change over to light snow tonight and Friday morning.
Kelly Cluff and Carla Jacome-Cluff of Hickory, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Katherine Jacome-Cluff to Dylan Raines, son of Bill and Betty Raines of Little Rock.
Katherine is in her second year of pharmacy school at the University of Mississippi.

The Newton Police Department investigated a bomb threat at Pilate Middle School Tuesday morning.
Newton Municipal School Superintendent Nola Bryant said that Pilate Middle Principal Sharon Hoye took a call for a bomb threat at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday. At that point, the school district implemented its emergency plan.
