PEARL — On Thursday morning, U.S. Congressman Gregg Harper (MS-03) announced that he will be not seeking a sixth term this year. Harper was first elected in 2008 and was re-elected to his fifth term in 2016. Mississippi’s Third District includes 23 counties including Newton and its surrounding counties.

The Union Police Department is searching for a man who is a suspect in numerous felonies, including motor vehicle theft, forgery and credit card fraud. Warrants for the arrest of Jarrod Stuart, a white male, are on file at the UPD.
Newton County’s unemployment rate rose two tenths of a percentage point from October to November to 4.9 percent according to data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Newton County was tied for the 39th lowest unemployment rate in the state with Leake and Chickasaw counties.
