Union girls get tough opening win

It wasn’t a pretty win to start out the season but first-year coach Matt Wilbanks will take the wins any way he can get them.

The Lady Yellowjackets overcame a slow start and took a 51-46 win over Stringer in the season opener.

“It wasn't pretty but with it being the first game in a new system for them and us trying to make a new identity, we did pretty good,” Willbanks said. “We were down 10 with 3:40 left and fought back. I was proud of our effort and character. I thought we showed a lot of heart and got it done.”

Stringer led for a majority of the contest after outscoring Union 13-5 in the first period. Union started to chip away in the second period as they outscored Stringer 10-8 as the Lady Red Devils led 23-15 at the half. Union continued to chip away in the third as they outscored Stringer 16-14 in the third to make the score 37-31 heading into the fourth. Union then outscored Stringer 20-11 to take five-point win/

Mackenzie Dolan had a big game for the Lady Jackets as she pumped in 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Ansley Rigby had 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists while Parker Breland had seven points and five rebounds. Kaliya Temple had four points while Dallas Brown had three points, three rebounds and three assists.

Union will play at Enterprise on Tuesday and at Newton County on Friday.

Union boys 62, Stringer 39

The Jackets used a big second quarter to pull away and take an easy win over Stringer on Saturday.

Union led just 9-5 after the first period but exploded in the second period as they outscored the Red Devils 24-13 to take a 33-18 lead at the half.

Union extended its lead in the third period as they outscored Stringer 21-12 to lead 54-30 at the end of the third.

J.T. Vance led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points while Jay Norris had 12 points. P.J. Gage had 11 points while Stephen Lewis chipped in six points.
