The defending 2A state champion Union Yellowjackets flexed their muscle at the Region 2-2A powerlifting meet last week.
The Jackets advanced 11 lifters to the North 2A meet which will be Feb. 24 at Calhoun City. The Jackets won the meet with a total of 69 points, just ahead of Scott Central with 53 points and Lake with 41 points.
The Newton County Cougars had to win both games this week to be the No. 1 seed in this week’s Division 5-4A tournament.
That’s exactly what they did as they beat Quitman 44-43 on Tuesday night and hammered Northeast Jones 61-47 on Thursday night.
The Newton County Academy Lady Generals finished second in the District 2-AA Tournament this past week and stand just one win away from qualifying for the Class AA state tournament.
The Lady Generals took a 46-40 win over Clinton Christian on Thursday night before falling to Brookhaven 54-34 in the tournament finals.
All Union’s Jevon Williams was looking for was a second chance.
After hurting his knee in the middle of the year warming up against Newton County, Williams was no longer recruited by any of the Mississippi junior colleges.
Williams will get his opportunity after he signed with Birmingham Prep last week.
The Newton Tigers should be more than battle tested as they head to the Division 4-2A Tournament this week.
After an easy 61-23 win over Lake, the Tigers needed overtime to beat Scott Central 60-56 and had to pull away in the fourth period to beat rival Union 53-43 on Friday night.
Both Union basketball teams ended the regular season with 14-11 records and will get a shot at a Division 4-2A crown this week as they host the tournament starting on Tuesday.
