Those traveling on South Main Street in Newton on Friday morning probably slowed down to see what was the commotion at Bedford Care Center of Newton.
Those onlookers saw numerous law enforcement vehicles and other emergency personnel responding to an active shooter drill at the Newton nursing home campus.
The City of Newton’s projected budget for fiscal year 2018 is including a three-percent pay raise across the board for all city employees.
Mayor Murray Weems said the increase doesn’t include the salaries of the mayor and aldermen. This comes a year after only two employees received pay raises.
Newton quarterback Tre Hillie continued his hot streak by throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for two more in a 54-13 rout of Choctaw Central at Morgan Field Friday night.
Hillie finished with an efficient 246 yards passing on a 7 of 10 performance with no interceptions. He also added 42 yards on the ground on seven carries.
Lake used its punishing ground attack to build a 17-point lead and was able to hang on for a 24-14 lead Friday night at home.
The combination of Marc Qualls and Ethan Gray proved to be a difficult matchup for the Dragons, as Qualls finished with 111 yards on 15 carries and Gray with 96 yards on 13 carries.
Several organizations in Newton County are running donation drives to help with the disaster relief response to Hurricane Harvey.
Newton County School District and the Union Public School District are collecting the following items beginning Thursday:

A new mission and thrift store is hoping to help unify Christians in Newton.
Hope Mission, which has been open for a few weeks, held its ribbon cutting last week. The organization features a thrift store, a café and a chapel, which is used to hold weekly services every Sunday at 3 p.m.
This past week, I had the opportunity to visit with Byron Artis, who heads the new Hope Mission in Newton.
Artis is not a newcomer to our area. He runs the House of Hope in Union and also runs missions in Louisville and Meridian.
