Sims gets key to the city to celebrate birthday

A resident at Bedford Care Center of Newton has reached a new milestone.

Geneva Sims, a native of the Scott County community of Lake, celebrated her 105th birthday on Friday of last week.

She celebrated the occasion surrounded by family and friends at the assisted living facility.

In addition to the party, Newton Mayor Murray Weems presented Geneva with a key to the city on Friday before party attendees had some cake and punch, which was provided by the Bedford Care Center staff.

Her son, the Rev. Johnny Sims, said that Geneva worked as a stay-at-home mother and enjoys quilting, crocheting and fishing, along with many other activities.

“She and her brother still sing together,” Johnny said. “You can’t hear her as well as you used to, but she still enjoys it.

“She used to take three different medications, but since 2013, she has been completely off any kind of medication.”

Johnny’s wife, Patricia, made a bold prediction when Geneva turned 100 years old.

“I told her that Lord willing, she was going to be around here at least five more years, and we were able to see that happen,” Patricia said. “I think she’s going to may be able to make it another five years.”

Geneva has one son and daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
