County stays unbeaten in district play
The Newton County Lady Cougars stayed unbeaten in Division 5-4A play with three more wins this past week.
Newton County opened the week with a tight 3-1 win over Northeast Jones on Tuesday and then took two games from Northeast Lauderdale on Thursday, winning 7-5 and 16-1.
Newton County, now 15-4-1, will host rival West Lauderdale on Tuesday in a 6:30 p.m. contest and will travel to Collinsville on Thursday to round out Division 5-4A play. County will finish out the week by traveling to Clarkdale on Friday.
County 3, Northeast Jones 1
The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the first inning and took a two-run win on Tuesday.
After County scored two in the first, they added one in the third. Northeast scored its one run in the sixth inning.
County had five hits in the contest, led by Jada McDougle who was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Shelby Anderson singled and scored a run while Katelyn Gipson and Lizzy Hollingsworth each had RBI singles in the contest. Anderson and McDougle each stole two bases apiece.
Shelby Anderson got the start and pitched all seven innings, scattering five hits while giving up one run and striking out three.
County 7, NE Lauderdale 5
The Lady Cougars needed a five-run sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Lady Trojans in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
After County went up 1-0 in the first, Northeast scored one in the second and two in the third to take a 3-1 lead. The two teams traded single runs in the fourth and fifth as Northeast led 4-2 after five innings. But County finally broke through with five runs in the sixth inning to take the win.
County had 10 hits in the contest as Shelby Anderson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Brittany Thomas was 2-for-3 while Jessie Thaggard had a single and two RBIs. Katelyn Gipson had a double and scored a run.
Brittany Thomas got the start and pitched 5 2/3 innings and gav eup five runs on six hits while striking out five to pick up the win. Anderson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without giving up a hit.
County 16, NE Lauderdale 1
The Lady Cougars bounced back from a poor Game 1 performance to take a three-inning, run-rule victory.
Shelby Anderson continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-3. Lorren Ivey was 2-for-3 while Jada McDougle had a home run, scored twice and drove in three runs. Karlye Tolbird drove in two runs while Lanie Phillips, Lizzy Hollingsworth and Jessi Thaggard each scored twice.
Shelby Anderson got the start and pitched two innings and gave up just one hit to pick up the win while Mackenzie Rigdon pitched the final inning and gave up one run on one walk.
