Three girls vie for Distinguished Young Woman title on Saturday


The Distinguished Young Woman program for Newton County will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at ECCC’s Huff Auditorium.

Doors will open around 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door and program books will be $5.

They are competing for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Newton County for 2019.  They are all juniors.

Newton County jobless rate rises slightly in December, state rate hits all-time low


Newton County’s unemployment rate rose slightly in December from November according to data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The jobless rate rose to 5.0 percent for December, up one percentage point from November when it was 4.9 percent.

Union sends 11 to North State


The defending 2A state champion Union Yellowjackets flexed their muscle at the Region 2-2A powerlifting meet last week.

The Jackets advanced 11 lifters to the North 2A meet which will be Feb. 24 at Calhoun City. The Jackets won the meet with a total of 69 points, just ahead of Scott Central with 53 points and Lake with 41 points.
