Martha Cuchens

Martha Susan McNab Cuchens died at her home in Newton on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at the age of 62. Susan was born on Saturday, May 5, 1956, in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and lived most of her childhood and teenage years in Valparaiso, Fla. She also lived in Hattiesburg, New Orleans, Pascagoula and for the last 33 years in Newton.

Charlene Pearson

Funeral services for Charlene Pearson were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29 at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Union. Bro. Rick Benson officiated. Burial followed at Union City Cemetery.

Mrs. Pearson, 83, of Union, passed away Friday, May 25, 2018, at UMMC in Jackson.

Granville Pinson

Services for Mr. Granville Ardell Pinson were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Bros. Lin Chesney and Rusty Walton will officiate.

Visitation was held  from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 26 and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27 at Milling Funeral Home of Union.

Bernice Hoyt

Services for Bernice Clark Hoyt will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home-Meridian. The Rev. Ron Leonard will be officiating. Burial will follow in Herbert Baptist Church Cemetery in the House community.


City mourns loss of Gordon


The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.


Vincent to lead state’s SBC


Clarke-Venable Baptist Church pastor Mark Vincent has been named the president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Vincent, who has served at Clark-Venable since June 2004, said he wasn’t seeking the position, but after praying and thinking about the opportunity, he agreed to serve if he was elected.
