East Central Community College sophomore golfer David Barry of Laurel claimed eighth place as an individual to help lead the Warriors to a fourth-place finish at the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Conference/State Tournament held April 12-13 at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw.
There’s a few hymns that really get to me, and “It Is Well” is one of them. I’ve sang in church choirs and I’ve played on stage in concerts, and every time I hear or perform it, I get chills. Few know the story behind the song.

Bennie Dollar, formerly of Gulfport and Brandon, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 31, 2018, in Birmingham, Ala., where he has resided for the past two years. He was 85.

The Lake Lady Hornets won two out of three contests this past week.
Lake hammered Puckett 10-0 on Monday and dropped a key 4-0 decision to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Lake finished the week with a 10-2 win over Sebastopol on Thursday.
No. 15 East Central Community College picked up an important road doubleheader sweep over the Hinds Community College Lady Eagles.
Newton County won a pair of one-point matches this past week as they won two out of three matches.
After a 6-1 loss to Jackson Academy on Tuesday, Newton County beat Jackson Prep and St. Andrew’s 4-3 on Thursday.
Neshoba County wasn’t kind to Lake last week, handing the Lady Hornets a pair of losses.
Lake lost 8-1 to defending 5A state champion Neshoba Central on Monday and lost 6-3 in a 4-2A showdown with Philadelphia. In other action, Lake hammered Newton 16-1, beat Nanih Waiya 6-1 and beat Ethel 7-4 on Saturday.
Janie Langham, 92, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at her residence in Little Rock.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 1 at Newton County Funeral Home-North. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2 at Greenland Baptist Church in Little Rock.

The Mississippi State Supreme Court has dismissed a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by the Collins family against the City of Newton and several city officials.
The Newton Police Department arrested two people on unrelated felony charges last week.
One suspect was Charles Carstapnar, 31, of Ora Street, who was charged with lustful touching. His bond was not available as of press time on Tuesday.

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament was as fun as any that I can remember. The only one I can remember that was more fun was the year Mississippi State made it to the Final Four. But for sheer enjoyment, the opening weekend was great.

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.
Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
It wasn’t the start or the finish that Tate Hanna envisioned when he took the head football job at Lake High School.
