4 enter race for Ward 4

Four people have already qualified to run in the July 1 Newton special election to fill a vacancy in Ward 4.

As of Tuesday morning, Terry Arrd, Franceania Moncrief, Ramonica Evans and Jesse Snow have all qualified to fill the position vacated by the death of Ray Payne.






Newton 4x800m wins state

One of the most exciting events of the day was one of the first on Friday at the Class 2A State Track Meet.

The Newton team of Jadarious Hardy, Ladarious Hardy, Tyreke Snow and Jeremiah Morris won the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:47.93, beating out Leflore County who finished with a time of 8:51.71.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.

Vincent to lead state’s SBC

Clarke-Venable Baptist Church pastor Mark Vincent has been named the president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Vincent, who has served at Clark-Venable since June 2004, said he wasn’t seeking the position, but after praying and thinking about the opportunity, he agreed to serve if he was elected.
