Cougars limp into playoffs

The Newton County Lady Cougars stumbled into the playoffs, losing two out of three contests last week.

The Lady Cougars suffered a pair of shutout losses, falling 5-0 to Enterprise and 7-0 to Neshoba Central. The Lady Cougars bounced back with an 8-4 win over Northwest Rankin to end the regular season.

No. 10 ECCC softball set to host state playoff series April 27-28

The No. 10 nationally ranked East Central Community College softball team will host a Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges first-round state playoff series Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, at the Softball Park in Decatur.

Hospital still in bankruptcy

Ascentium Healthcare Resources will be taking over the management of Lackey Memorial Hospital in Forest and businesses that were being managed by Pioneer Health Services.

However, it will not include the former Pioneer Community Hospital of Newton, according to Sydney Sawyer, chief executive of the newly formed Ascentium.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
