Newton Country Club sets Fourth of July tournament

The Newton Country Club will host a 1 Person Scramble (18 holes) Wednesday, July 4.

Tee time is at 1 p.m. Morning tee times will be used if necessary.

Entry fee is $20 per person.

William Burton

Funeral services for William Burton were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14 at Thomas & Jones Funeral Home, Las Vegas. Burton, 85, died Saturday, April 28, 2018. Services were under the direction of Thomas and Jones Funeral Home.


Gerald Matlock

Services for Mr. Gerald Matlock were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 31 at Milling Funeral Home Chapel of Union with burial in the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Jamie Leach officiated.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Milling Funeral Home of Union.

Martha Cuchens

Martha Susan McNab Cuchens died at her home in Newton on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at the age of 62. Susan was born on Saturday, May 5, 1956, in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and lived most of her childhood and teenage years in Valparaiso, Fla. She also lived in Hattiesburg, New Orleans, Pascagoula and for the last 33 years in Newton.


City mourns loss of Gordon


The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
