Old gym gets new life

The old gymnasium on the campus of Union Elementary and High schools has served the needs of Yellowjacket nation for the last 71 years, and school officials hope it will continue to serve the community for another 71 years or more after the school district completed a $300,000 renovation.


Post receives 48-star flag

The American Legion Post 89 in Decatur has a new item in its collection of historical items related to veterans in Newton County and other areas.

Last week, D.L. Turner of Newton donated a 48-star flag to the post that dates back to before Alaska and Hawaii were added as U.S. states.


Pioneer visits Union

Nationally known Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps and Color Guard from Milwaukee, Wisc., made a stop in Union Thursday for rehearsals on its way to competitions in Dothan, Ala., the next day and Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday.

Lake bound for state

It’s often been said to win a state championship, you have to get a break somewhere along the way.

Ironically, East Union may have given Lake the break it needed.

East Union knocked out Division 4-2A champion Philadelphia, a team that beat Lake twice in the regular season.



Four Newton County teenagers arrested in shooting, high-speed chase

Four Newton County teenagers are being held at the Lauderdale County Jail after being arrested after shooting at a Lauderdale County sheriff’s deputy and leading authorities on a high speed chase on Monday afternoon.

While no one was injured, shots were reportedly fired at a Lauderdale County deputy’s patrol car during the pursuit.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.
