Bridge closing affecting residents
By BRENT MAZE,One bridge has reopened while another remains closed after Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency and ordered 87 bridges closed last week across the state.
Two of those bridges were in Newton County. The one on Liberty Church Road in Newton has reopened while the other on Buckley Road in Hickory remains closed.

Judge sentences Roberts to 20 years in 2016 fatal stabbing
By DEMETRIUS THOMPSON,A jury convicted Selena Roberts of manslaughter for the June 2016 fatal stabbing of her boyfriend, Danny Brown, on Tuesday, April 10 in the Newton County Eighth District Circuit Court. Circuit Court Judge Chris Collins sentenced Roberts to the maximum 20-year prison sentence on Thursday.
Former CMRC patient sentenced in stabbing case

Judge declares mistrial in murder case

Company questions 911 over call center upgrade

Purvis said he thought his company wasn’t given a fair chance to match the bid by Jackson Communications.

City mourns loss of Gordon
By DEMETRIUS THOMPSON,The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.
Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.

Local car theft suspects nabbed in Kosciusko

UPD Chief Billy Pat Walker said the department learned that James B. Rice, 31, and Joshua A. Andrews, both of Neshoba County, were spotted in Kosciusko. The two were suspected in the taking of a motor vehicle from the Hilltop Nursing Home in Union on Dec. 12.
Man dies in two-vehicle wreck on Hwy. 80
By DEMETRIUS THOMPSON,Newton County suffered its first vehicular fatality of 2018 on Tuesday evening.
Darryl Henderson, 54, of Union, was killed in a head on collision at around 5:17 p.m. at the I-20 exit on Hwy. 80 near the Marathon gas station.
