Margaret Pace

Margaret Ann Beach Pace, 79, passed away on April 2, 2018.

Margaret was born May 11, 1938, in Montgomery, Ala., to Fred and Irella Beach. Margaret married Tommy Pace of Newton on Dec. 16, 1958.

Reeves inks with Belhaven


Peyton Reeves blossomed on the basketball courts at Newton County this year.

Now the 6-foot-4 senior hopes the same thing will happen at Belhaven University in Jackson.

Reeves signed to play basketball with the Blazers last week.

For his coach and grandfather Steve Harber, it was a day he will never forget.


Aldermen discuss alcohol


Newton’s Board of Aldermen are considering ways to increase tax revenue, and that included the possiblity of legalizing all alcohol sales.

Alderman Ray Payne said he was tired of seeing all of the tax money spent on alcohol by local residents going to other counties.

Water, fire, police departments get Board’s attention in April meeting


There wasn’t any mention of the Street Department in last week’s April meeting of the Union Board of Aldermen; but, every other department got its time at the table.

Mayor Wayne Welch told the Aldermen that Union was still studying what action it will take with regards to County Line Water Association.

St. John MHV Club holds March meeting

The St. John MHV Club met on Friday, March 9 at the Newton Public Library. Vice president Shirley Johnson called the meeting to order.

Members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and the devotion followed.


City mourns loss of Gordon


The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.


Fire engulfs Newton home


A home on Third Avenue in Newton was gutted by a fire this afternoon.

Firefighters from Newton, Decatur and Hickory responded to the blaze, which consumed the interior of a brick home that had a chimney.

There were no apparent injuries from the fire as of this afternoon. The cause is under investigation.
