Bennie Dollar

Bennie Dollar, formerly of Gulfport and Brandon, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 31, 2018, in Birmingham, Ala., where he has resided for the past two years. He was 85.

Mr. Dollar is survived by three sons, Dennis Dollar (Janie) of Birmingham, Ala.; Craig Dollar (Theresa) of Hattiesburg, and Kent Dollar (Lisa) of Cookeville, Tenn. He has six grandchildren, Chris Dollar (Sally) of Birmingham, Ala.; Lindsay Moryoussef (David) of Birmingham, Ala., Jessica Coulter (Chris) of Hattiesburg, Callie Dollar of Birmingham, Ala.; Rachel Dollar and Hannah Dollar both of Cookeville, Tenn. He has seven great grandchildren, Luke Dollar, Anna Dollar, Maggie Dollar, Jacob Moryoussef, Emmett Moryoussef, Mack Coulter and Annie Lauren Coulter.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Sharp Dollar; his parents, Emmett and Ruby Evans Dollar of Union; and five siblings, DeWitt Dollar, Merle Dollar Watkins, Sybil Dollar Heflin, Evan Dollar and Oliver Dollar.

Mr. Dollar was the longtime manager of Paine Refrigeration Supply Company in Gulfport and an executive with Hughes Supply in Jackson before his retirement. He was a graduate of Union High School in Union and attended East Central Junior College in Decatur.

He was a Korean War era veteran of the United States Air Force. A longtime Dixie Youth baseball coach and former league commissioner in Gulfport, Mr. Dollar was a Christian, a member of Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon and had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Bayou View Baptist Church in Gulfport.

The services were held at Ott & Lee Funeral Home, 1360 West Government Street, Brandon, MS 39042 at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4. Friends and relatives visited from 9-11 a.m. on that date. Burial followed at 3 p.m. Pinckney Baptist Church Cemetery, 348 Pinckney Church Road, Union, MS 39365.
