Yellowjackets dominated by Rebels in district game

The Scott Central Rebels have been steamrolling opponents all season and the Union Yellowjackets were no exception last week.

The Rebels built a 35-0 lead in the first quarter as they beat Union 64-0 on Friday night.

With the loss, the Yellowjackets fall to 2-5 on the season and have lost four in row. Things don’t get any better this week as the Jackets host top-ranked Philadelphia on Thursday night.

As indicated by the score, the game was a total mismatch as Scott Central had 374 yards of total offense to Union’s 87 yards and also forced four turnovers.

“They are really talented and they play really hard,” Union coach Brad Breland said. “They have a good bunch, there’s no doubt about it. We fumbled the first two series and gave them the ball on the 20 and they returned another one for a touchdown. That’s stuff you can’t do against good football teams. And that’s stuff that I think comes from a lot of complacency. I think it’s not really focusing and not really giving it our best.”

The Jackets are now down six starters that started both ways from the beginning of the season as injuries have decimated the Union roster. Union started seven freshmen and four sophomores on Friday night.

“It seems like it’s something every day,” Breland said. “We lost another starter this week to an illness. It’s just one thing after another. I have been here for 17 years and this is the first time that we have ever gone through anything like this. So I guess we should consider ourselves blessed in that respect.”

As Union fumbled on its first two possessions, Scott Central took quick advantage as T.J. Wash threw a 19-yard touchdown pass and ran a 21-yard touchdown as the Rebels led 14-0 with 10:31 still left in the first quarter.

The Rebels added three more scores in the first quarter to lead 35-0.

Wash stayed busy in the second quarter as he scored on runs of 9, 29 and 60 yards as Scott Central led 50-0 at the half.

Wash had 171 yards on six carries to lead Scott Central while Tyrell Shepard had 103 yards on 11 carries.

Jaheim Gill had 41 yards rushing on eight carries to lead Union while Ethan Kinard had 22 yards on 11 carries while Lane Hanna had 15 yards on 14 carries and Colby Ferguson had 11 yards on three carries.

Peyton Posey led the Union defense with 3.5 tackles.
