The Newton County Appeal newspaper was born from the previous Union Appeal and Newton Appeal newspapers. The newspaper was created in 2009 to serve all of Newton County. It continues the century-old legacy of those former publications.
It is the only newspaper that serves Newton, Union, Decatur, Hickory and the rest of Newton County. The newspaper also serves readers in southern Neshoba County. The Newton County Appeal also publishes several niche publications, including Profile magazine, Health Today medical directory and sports season previews, among others.
The Newton County Appeal is part of a network of Mississippi-owned community newspapers and magazines, with roots dating back to 1923 when the company's founder, John Oliver Emmerich Sr., bought a weekly newspaper called the Enterprise in McComb.
In the years since, the company has grown to include 27 paid daily and weekly newspapers, 10 shoppers, a military base publication, 18 websites, and more than 100 niche publications. Many of the company's newspapers – including those published locally – are still printed in McComb.
